served on the TROUBRIDGE during the refit, left before commissioning. Few familiar names in the
commissioning booklet I can recall - met one or two in later life: Boot Lacey and Alan Milne ended up like me in boats, Butch Newnham on the RFAs in Guzz, Nick Freeman in Cammell Lairds while I was on CONQUEROR, and Don Glendenning playing football in Faslane. Remember George Laybourne well - he was the first bloke I met who could play the guitar part to House of the Rising Sun.

I am trying to find information about that ship and the following: HMCS Magog, HMCS Waskesui, and HMCS Quatsino. Great site - although I am biased as a Haslemere dweller. I see from your naval records that you were a radio man, as was my dad (who also now lives in Haslemere), who ended up a Chief PO and served 1955-1969(for his sins) and sailed in Daring class destroyers amongst other postings (including to Simonstown, where he met my mother). But I must make a comment on HMS Daring first commission
Photographs? Daring up until 1957 had a large centre funnel. Changed in a Gibraltar refit to a small type as shown in your first commission photographs, so they must be photographs of Daring after 1957.
I served on Daring from Nov1956-Nov1958, the entire crew
flew from London to Malta. Daring was at anchor in Grand Harbour.

My father Arthur Axford born 1921 in London, son of Arthur Axford, the
details of which are unknown as my fathers mother (maiden name Freeman)died
when he was three years old and he went to live with his aunty. His father
remarried and they lost contact with each other. Arthur still lives in London,
in the Barbican. We do know that Arthur's father had brothers, but we do not
know their names. Is their anything in your family history mentioning Arthur.

Hi David. I am looking for information on Stoatley Rough (spelling?). It
was a boarding school in Haslemere for Kindertransport children from
1938-until the end of the war at least. My dad, John Goldsmith, was a
kindertransport child and has told us many, many stories of Haslemere and

I'm seeking any relics of HMS Cressy, which was sunk with the Aboukir and
the Hogue off the Broad Fourteens at the outset of WWI. My granfather lost his
life in that action. Of particular interest would be a Cressy hat band, but

G'day David, Just found your site, great stuff. I joined RN in 1950 at
Ganges. From Ganges to Battleaxe - Indomitable - Concord - Highflyer (Ceylon
West) - Hornet (MGB5015 and Dark Biter) - Highflyer (CWRS) again (paradise).
Plus a few fleeting visits to Mercury. Have been trying to contact old mates
