FEARLESS

Chief Shipwright R.D. Eccles

Back in 1965 Chief Shipwright R.D. Eccles was the first person to operate
the lowering of the stern on HMS Fearless. He was also a ship's diver for 10 years.

In May 1956 he kitted up his best friend Commander Buster Crabb GM OBE,
the diver who famously disappeared in Portsmouth Harbour whilst doing "underwater tests"
on a visiting Soviet cruiser, Ordzhonikdze. It wasn't until 26th June 1957 that the
headless body of Buster Crab was discovered in Chichester Harbour.
