San Miguel is a golden, pilsner-style beer that is made with malt (80%) and lagered for a month. It is brewed in Hong Kong but there are many more countries in the Far east that have San Miguel breweries, the first was in Manila in the Phillipines. This small brewery was established next to the colonial mansion of the Spanish governor-general in 1890. Nowadays the brewery is responsible for 85% of the Filipino beer market. One of the landmarks of Hong Kong used to be on top of the Royal Navy's China Fleet Club in Wanchai. A huge advertisement of a bottle of San Miguel alongside a glass of the golden liquid. There was also some Chinese lettering and the San Miguel logo. This was erected in 1955 and was then the largest neon-lit advertising board in Hong Kong. However this was replaced by a Johnny Walker sign in 1960. |
