Castle Lager

Castle lager is the leading brand from the South African breweries. It is lemony-tasting, pale, dry and hoppy. Brewed using barley malt, maize and sucrose. The Castle brewery was founded by Charles Glass back in Johannesburg in 1884.

Castle lager (5%) was the first bottom fermented beer brewed in Africa. The plant was bought by the South African pioneer, Frederick Mead, from the Pfaudler Vacuum Company of the United States of America.

Castle lager was first produced in 1898 and was such a popular beer that the breweries chose the Castle name for all of its beers and breweries. This refreshing brew was quickly imitated by rival breweries.
