BRITISH WEEK IN SWEDEN, 1968

BRITISH WEEK is, as this programme makes clear, more than just a trade promotion. It is a demonstration of Anglo-Swedish friendship and cooperation in many fields. For nine days you will find ‘things British’ not only in the central district of Stockholm where the British Week is concentrated but also in Farsta, Skärholmen and Vallingby — and even beyond the boundaries of Stockholm in Solna, whose City Council welcomed the extension of British Week to Solna Centrum. And you will see not just a wealth of British goods offered for sale in shops both large and small, but a complementary range of British manifestations of a hundred different kinds.

You will be able to walk down flag-lined streets, listening to famous British military bands. You will be able to visit exhibitions of many kinds whose subjects range from design to the work of the British Post Office, from the art treasures of the City of London to advanced technology. You will be able to see fashion shows more lavish and spectacular than any you have seen before. To listen to pop and folk singing — or a Beethoven trio — by British artists. To walk aboard ships of the Royal Navy. To watch British players in golf, tennis, football and other sports. To see Britain’s National Theatre Company. These and a hundred other things are given in the programme that follows. And, if you are confused by all that is going, you can always ask a British policeman the way! Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra and her husband, the Honourable Angus Ogilvy, are returning to Sweden as guests of honour to open British Week and to attend a number of the events. The Lord Mayor of London will come with other civic dignitaries from the City. The President of the Board of Trade is to attend, as are the Chairman and members of Britain’s Export Council for Europe. And Stockholm will be visited by many, many personalities in the fields of sport and entertainment — including a colourful contingent of Scottish sportsmen who will take part in the fascinating spectacle of the Highland Games — as well as by the British policemen, over a hundred military bandsmen and the crews of four naval vessels.

Although sponsored by the Board of Trade and the British National Export Council’s Export Council for Europe, the British Week could not have taken place without the encouragement, support and active help of a host of Swedish institutions, officials, business men and private individuals. To the members of the British Week Committee, who gave so freely of their time and experience in guiding the organisational work of the British Embassy and British Week Office, to the members of Stockholm City Council and their staffs, to the Police Department, to Street Associations, import agents, stores great and small and, not least, to the people of Stockholm themselves must go the credit for making British Week a truly memorable milestone in Anglo-Swedish relations.

PAGELLE fashion stores are sponsoring a ‘Swinging London’ midnight show at Berns restaurant every night as well as giving fashion shows in the stores themselves. Eight branches will open on Sunday, 29 September, with special attractions including shows of ‘fun furs’.

ÅHLÉNS City are presenting frequent fashion shows in the cafeteria — just one of many attractions that include a Bass pub, ‘Sir Winston Churchill at Marrakesh’ (arranged with Madame Tussauds in London), a 1912 Rolls Royce ‘Silver Ghost’ and BBC disc jockey Rick Dane at the turntables. Films of London will be shown on the store’s television network throughout the day and Big Ben will chime in the store. Many attractions will be shared with ÅHLÉNS Söder, including visits by such personalities as Mary Quant and ‘Miss London Stores’, special fashion presentations and Lipton’s Tea Parties, English style.

PUB are naturally, presenting an English-style pub. Fashion comes high on the list of the many British goods to be specially featured and there are frequent fashion shows for visitors. ‘Travel to Britain’ is the theme of the store’s windows, thanks to collaboration with British European Airways and the British Travel Association.

EPA, HENNES, MEA, MARTIN OLSSON, TEMPO, TWILFIT are six more names to keep in mind. All, in their own distinctive ways, are joining in British Week and presenting wide ranges of British goods of all kinds to the best advantage.

A. A. PATROLMAN: The British Automobile Association’s patrolmen, whose duty is to help the Association’s members in every way they can, are a feature of motoring in Britain. With the help of the British Travel Association and Svenska BP Olje AB, a patrolman will be touring Stockholm in his distinctive yellow mini-van, explaining his work and talking about motoring in Britain.

SHIPS OF THE ROYAL NAVY are arriving on the first day of British Week. The destroyer, HMS Daring, the frigate, HMS Cleopatra and two submarines, HMS Narwhal and Ambush will tie up alongside at Kastellholmen. Their crews will mingle with the crowds throughout the Week and the ships will be open to the public on certain days (see Daily Programme).

WINDOW DRESSING COMPETITION. Hundreds of shops have entered the British Week Window Dressing Competition sponsored by the British-Swedish Chamber of Commerce and Expressen. You can win a prize by picking the winner! Choose what you consider the best displays and enter them on the form to be published in Expressen and available in the shops displaying the Competition showcard. The full range of prizes including British motor cars — can be seen in the showrooms of Ingvar Bergengren AB, Strandvägen 9. The prizes will be presented on the stage in Kungsträdgården on Saturday, 5 October (see Daily Programme).

SAIL TRAINING CRUISER ‘Sir WINSTON CHURCHILL’ — recently one of the leading contenders in the Tall Ships Race — will be moored at Nybrokajen throughout the British Week. She will be open to the public on Sunday, 29 September (see Daily Programme) and later in the Week will be joined by the Norwegian sailing vessel, Staatsraad Lenkuhl.

WHAT TO SEE in the streets

The streets of Central Stockholm, Gamls Stan, Farsta, Skärholmen, Vällingby and of Solna Centrum, too, are gay with the window displays of a thousand shops and stores. A score of streets and shopping precincts have been decorated with flags and bunting by their street associations specially for British Week. But there is much more than this to see. Here are some suggestions for things and people to watch out for —or to make a special trip to see.

MILITARY BANDS — three of them, from the Coldstream Guards, the 9/12 Royal Lancers and the 1st Battalion of the Royal Scots, together with the Corps of Pipes and Drums of the Royal Scots, will be in Stockholm throughout British Week. They are playing many concerts in a dozen different places — see the daily programme for details of where you can hear them.

BRITISH ‘BOBBIES’ a contingent of policemen and policewomen from Suffolk Constabulary will be in Stockholm and Solna throughout the Week and can be seen on duty with their Swedish colleagues. One constable is the tallest in the British police forces - 6 ft. 8½ in.! You should have no difficulty in spotting him!

PHOENIX DANCE GROUP — a highly skilled amateur group of English folk dancers can be seen taking part in the ‘Promenade Shows’ organised by Östermalms Intressenter in Östermalmstorg (for times see Daily Programme).

SPOT THE VISITORS who will throng Stockholm’s streets during British Week! Many will be businessmen from all over Scandinavia and from Britain, too. Others will be holidaymakers. But among them will be many distinguished visitors. HRH Princess Alexandra and her husband, the Honourable Angus Ogilvy, as well as attending many important functions will spend much of their time touring Stockholm’s shopping areas, looking in at stores and visiting some of the many exhibitions to be seen during British Week - full details of the Royal Party’s programme are given in the following pages. The Lord Mayor of London and the President of the Board of Trade will also be in Stockholm and will be following a full programme of sightseeing around the features of British Week. The Daily Programme tells you where and when you can see them. Watch out, too, for such personalities as Mary Quant or Mr. Geoffrey Williams, winner of the Observer 1968 Single-handed Transatlantic Yacht Race, for the pop stars who are here, for the actors of the National Theatre Company who are appearing at Dramaten, for the British tennis players, for the top golfers who are playing at Djursholm Golf Club and for the scores of others who will be here for British Week.
