Lythe Hill

Rear view of the Tudor style house designed by Fred Cockerell, ARA, Circa 1871.
During 1957 this house was taken over by the Admiralty for use by the staff of
Commodore Naval Drafting and was named HMS Centurion. In the mid nineteen-
sixties, on the far left, was where the communicators used to bunk down with the
signal pads, teleprinter rolls etc., stored in the room above. The room on the right
of the rear entrance was the Main Signal Office with a direct teleprinter line
to Whitehall. The Royal Navy moved from Lythe Hill in 1970,  transferring
HMS Centurion to Gosport, Hampshire.
Many years later Lythe Hill house was consumed in a fire.
